Indian Lake

Indian Lake

This lake is a wonderful nature experience, formed by a dam on the Indian River. Water levels vary by season. The base is rocky substrate with many rocky outcrops along the shoreline, very scenic with many sheltered bays.

The maximum depth is 80 feet but the mean depth is only 39 feet, with numerous unmarked shoals. Island camping available by reservation. Snowy Mountain's rugged cliffs stand out above the western shore. The view from Baldface Mountain is a short 1.25-mile hike that starts from the lake in Norman's Cove.

Indian Lake is 4,255 acres in size, has a shoreline of 50 miles, and the length of this narrow lake is 14 miles.

Getting there

Use the Indian Lake Islands DEC Campground access on Route 30, 14 miles north of the Village of Speculator. It is not safe to launch boats near the dam on the north end of the lake. The DEC maintains a hard surface ramp with parking for 50 cars and trailers.

Paddling

The northeast orientation of the lake can lead to rough water according to weather. Watch for motorboats, as the lake is shared. For a quiet experience, stick to the shorelines and bays.
