Hunting in the Adirondacks

Big Game, Long Season

White-tailed deer, black bears, grouse, turkeys, ducks, coyotes, and small game are just a few of the Adirondack wildlife found on one-million acres of public land here. The deep woods and isolated waters have challenged and rewarded skillful Northern Zone hunters for centuries.

Public lands are plentiful in the Adirondacks and make for great hunting. The almost 80,000-acre Moose River Plains Complex, with seasonal roads and over 100 primitive campsites, is just one example. Here, drive-up campsites along Limekiln Lake-Cedar River Road (a.k.a. the Moose River Plains Road) provide easy-access base camp locations for extended hunting trips. The Siamese Ponds Wilderness offers some of the finest hunting for those with a passion for a true backcountry wilderness hunt. Licensed guides can also enhance your experience.

Hunting seasons, as well as licensing and reporting requirements, are administered by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. If you have purchased a New York state hunting license before, you may order one on-line. Qualified hunters may also purchase licenses from town clerks and at many sporting goods stores.

Leave No Trace

The magic of the Adirondacks is the result of previous generations taking a long view and protecting the mountains, lakes, and rivers within the Blue Line. That tradition continues today as we support and encourage everyone to practice Leave No Trace ethics, which help protect the lands and waters of the Adirondacks.
